I do both sometimes I pin baste and some times a sew baste. When my mother, sister and I get together and sew baste quilts anf that seems to work out better.

Hi, thanks for participating! I'm still trying to figure out the best way to baste... pins seem to hold the most firmly, but are prone to making their holes bigger and also to catching thread and generally getting in the way. Stitches seem superior in every way... except they may take longer and not hold as firmly. I honestly don't know... I hate both ways. ;-)

i spray basted my first quilt and that worked out fine, except that i ran out of spray towards the end, which meant 1 corner didnt end up sandwiching very well.... but now, i've switched to fusible batting, and love it. once you've laid out the sandwich all you do is iron over it and you are all set! how cool is that?

I've never basted a quilt yet. So far, I've only made a doll quilt, so I guess I safety pinned or pinned it with regular pins, but it was so small it barely needed it. Now I'm working on a huge quilt and I plan to spray baste it based on what I've heard from quilter friends.

Since I make little quilts, I primarily use basting spray. With bigger quilts, I use a quilt tack thingie (which I admit doesn't work quite as well as basting stitches). I also do a lot of quilting in sections that allows me to use basting spray.

As to basting, when I learned to quilt, I used the safety pins. All 50 billion of them. I also like the basting guns. It just depends on the project.

Hi Karen,
I grew up on the prairies of Alberta and we have Badlands here too- in the Drumheller area. The Hoodoos are amazing aren't they?
I use a fabric glue to spray baste my quilts together. It works great and takes less time to do than pin basting, which is the way that I was taught. I do not hand quilt- I machine quilt so it makes it easier to quilt with the stability of gluing and you don't break as many needles as when I pinned it together to quilt.I also make only bed sized quilts which can take quite a time to pin.
